Aurangabad Caves: Echoing silence through the stones

Some places don't announce themselves with towering gates or endless crowds. They quietly wait for those willing to climb a few steps and slow down. The Aurangabad Caves are one such hidden treasure in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Overshadowed by the world-famous Ellora and Ajanta Caves, these ancient rock-cut structures offer something that many popular destinations can’t – serenity and peaceful environment.

That was the Day 4 of our exploration and sacred early morning was selected for Aurangabad Caves. We were driving with windowpanes down and as the car began to climb up the hill, the calm morning breeze was welcoming us to carry us to another era. The Aurangabad Caves were carved nearly 1,500 years ago and we were the only visitors to hear the long-held stories. Caves open at 9AM and we were few minutes earlier to start the climb to Western cluster to explore caves numbered from 1 to 5. 1st view of the Western Group, after climbing the stairs -  

Cave 1 is amongst the largest in the cluster with ribs like structured roof. Adjacent is an open cave with Buddha in sitting pose -

There is Cave 3, with massive pillars, beautifully sculpted Bodhisattvas, and Buddha seated in the hall.

Going around the cluster with perfect solitude made the experience even more special. And we same across this cave wall, full of Buddhas or probably some are the disciples- 

Spread across two separate groups with twelve caves in total, visitors are required to keep the tickets as single ticket remains valid for both cluster of caves. Within 5 minutes we were at Eastern Group of Caves. Unlike grand entrance of Western Group, Eastern side is more like tiny openings in the mountains, hiding a world within.

As we move to explore the Eastern cluster caves, the transition from the austerity to the decorated style becomes visible. Check out the figures on the cave walls with associated stories - 

Dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries, the Aurangabad Caves impress through their intimate atmosphere and stone craftsmanship, unlike Ajanta's elaborate murals or Ellora's monumental scale, these caves are unlike other rock-cut caves in India.

Every chisel mark reflects extraordinary patience and devotion. The sculptures appear almost alive, their expressions carrying a serenity that transcends centuries. Also, God Ganesh and Buddha are enjoying a discussion in this most majestic part of the caves - 

Walking through the caves, we noticed intricate carvings of graceful female figures, and decorative motifs that hint at artistic influences flowing across ancient trade routes.

One of the greatest pleasures here is the silence, hearing birds calling from the surrounding hills and your own footsteps echoing through halls that create a vibe of different kind all together. 

Visit here is an exercise to reflect on how civilizations evolve while some places remain timeless. The Aurangabad Caves allow visitors to appreciate history without distraction, to admire remarkable craftsmanship without crowds, and to experience heritage at a relaxed pace. Also, the caves offer sweeping views of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and amazing connecting road to the spot. 

Another addition to list of amazing roads of India. In your journey through Maharashtra, keep aside a couple of hours for this lesser-known gem, climb the hill, and let these forgotten caves tell their own story. Sometimes, the memorable destinations are not the ones featured on every postcard; they are the ones that quietly explored. Almost 1.5 hours we had spent here and now it was the time to move away from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and proceed to Lonar to explore the lake formed by a falling meteorite, over 50,000 years back.

 

To conclude - Aurangabad Caves are more than another archaeological site, but a piece of history whispering through the stone and waiting patiently to be listened.
